Planning a MoIP network

Switch features and configurations vary between manufacturers. Refer to the manufacturer's user manual when configuring the required features to support MoIP.

Caution: Configure the network before connecting MoIP devices to avoid network flooding and overall instability.

MoIP switch minimum requirements

  • Layer 2 or Layer 3 Managed

  • IGMP Snooping configuration

  • IGMP querier configuration

  • Jumbo Frames (8000 bytes or larger)

  • IGMP settings for router learning

  • Pro Tip: Use Araknis 920 series switches for their Easy MoIP Setup feature.

B-960 requirements:

  • An Araknis 920 series switch

  • 10 Gigabit Ethernet port throughput (minimum)

    • Simultaneous 30 Watts PoE+ across all ports (minimum)

  • CAT6/6A/7

    • Maximum distance from the switch: CAT6 = 30 m (98'), CAT6A = 100 m (328')

B-900 requirements:

  • 1 Gigabit Ethernet port throughput (minimum)

  • Simultaneous 7.5 Watts PoE across all ports (minimum)

Caution: Do not use keystones with MoIP devices.

Given the flexibility and scalability of Binary’s Media over IP system, plan for a switch with more Ethernet ports than needed so more MoIP devices can be added in the future.

For example, using an Araknis 920 Series 24-port PoE switch, the maximum MoIP system size is 22 MoIP transmitters and MoIP receivers, including a port for the MoIP controller and switch uplink.

Pro Tip: Leave at least one uplink available to keep the system scalable and use SFP adapters instead of Ethernet ports for switch uplinks to free up valuable switchports.

When determining the size of the switch needed, count one port for each of the following devices:

  • Number of sources (MoIP transmitters)

  • Number of displays (MoIP receivers)

  • MoIP controller

  • LAN connection to the main network topology

Power for B-960 devices

MoIP transmitters and receivers require 30W for power. You can use Power-over-Ethernet+ (PoE+) or a separate 12V 3Apower supply (sold separately). You must use the included 5V power supply for the MoIP controller.

Power for B-900 devices

MoIP transmitters and receivers require 7.5W for power. You can use Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) or a separate 12V power supply (sold separately). You must use the included 5V power supply for the MoIP controller.

MoIP device locations

  • Connect all MoIP devices to the switches making up the MoIP network topology, described below.

  • Connect the MoIP controller to the MoIP core switch.

Pro Tip: Assign the Core MoIP switch to the lowest IP address among any switches with the IGMP querier state enabled or participating in querier election participation. Doing so ensures the Core MoIP switch is always elected as the IGMP querier in the network topology.

  • Connect as many of the MoIP transmitters to the MoIP core switch as possible. Preferably all of them, to distribute bandwidth evenly.

Caution: Never connect a MoIP device to an unmanaged switch. Unmanaged switches can only be used as edge switches in the physical network topology because they cannot manage IGMP traffic.
